Internet connection in L'Aquila

I guess all of us have already got Danilo Lariviera's message about Internet opportunities in L'Aquila.

In this topic I'd like all of the students to say whether they are going to use Internet in the residence or not.

As for me, I'm very happy and thankful that we were given such a possibility and I think it's quite cheap to pay EUR 4 per month for it.

As far as I understood the overall bandwidth of intenet channel is 20 Mb/s, so since there're 28 of us and I guess most of us will use it, the speed may be a bit low but it hopefully be enough and we won't have to arrange a second line to increase it.

i will use internet.Maybe we should tell to Mr Danilo Larivera that we don't mind paying additionally to obtain suitable connection.

Martina, yes, that's the main reason why I created this topic - to find out if we need to have the additional line or not.

I agreed to the installation of Internet connection. But my concern is also the speed. Right now, I cannot imagine how slow 20Mbps divided by 28 would be. Any ideas?

I guess we should also discuss how we will use the Internet connection (whether for e-mails, instant messaging and web browsing only or for uploading/downloading also.)

I will definitely support the idea of having internet connection.

Dimitry, I dont think we need another connection.

Jade, 20 Mbps is quite enough for all uses like browsing, instant messaging, voice chat etc and also downloading and uploading. Even if we assume that all 28 will be using internet, not many wil be using simultaneously. So, I think it'll be enough for us.

As for me, I do not have any objection! :)

I agree with Haris. 20Mbps may be enough. If that does not meet our need, we can add another connection after our arrival at L'Aquila.

Besides, I also think the internet is necessary:)

Hello everybody,
I will use internet, of course.

I tried to find out how many simultaneous connections will be supported(different IP's), but no results yet. It is important because most of us will use VoIP (skype) or similar applications.

I actually have at my place a 20Mbps ADSL connection, with a wi-fi router included, it does support only 4 connections (wifi/ethernet/usb cumulated).

Certainly we will need a hub/switch and a software to manage equal speed quotas.

I prefer ethernet connection instead of wifi (signal could not be so strong as it is not a hotspot)

For your information, in France there are many Internet Providers (there is also a daughter-company of 187.it that Danilo Larivera provided) that offer almost the same services.

In any case will keep trying to find out more about the IP's and let everybody know.

I agreed to have the internet connection. I don't know very much about how much speed we need. But I used to use skype with internet speed lower than 1 Mbps and it was ok.

However, I don't mind additional paying for faster speed.

Senshan, it may be not convenient to install a second line after our arrival and having one already installed because, as Mr. Danilo Larivera said, the installation process may take a month or so - that means we'll have both lines installed by the middle of October only (I assume we will get and check the quality of the first line by the middle of September).

Marin, thank you for the information. Do you mean that it's the WiFi router's limitation of 4 simultaneous connections? I don't think it's a big problem because we can change the router (they're not expensive) or probably just its firmware...
As for the comparison between WiFi and Ethernet - I don't think we have right to choose. I hardly believe they will drill walls of Monastery to let us have Ethernet cable connection in every room for a few months. Moreover, I don't think WiFi router will have such a bad signal (though, of course, a lot depends on the size and construction of our residence).

i think that this building will have thick walls - its common for old buildings and monasteries. Reflection of signal can be weaken due to thick walls...

Dmitry, basically the routers are provided by the internet operator (187.it = Telecom Italia) and are particular. We need to check this feature (support of simultaneous connections) before subscribing.
I will try to contact the daughter-company because the technologies are the same in both countries.

As for the ethernet, let me explain: this offer will need an asymetric telephone (not dial-up !) connection. So we'll have our modem/router plugged to a phone jack. Then is easy to configure and divide speed without any drilling. We can cable-up it properly.

I hope Mr. Larivera could give us more info about this issue. I also hope he factored in multiple connections in the price quotation he gave us. I guess we should ask him also. I think it will cost us more than 4 euros per month. But it's still better than nothing. :)

Hi all!

I will use internet so I don't mind paying money to have a suitable connection with a good speed.

Marin, sorry, but I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make about the Ethernet connection, so correct me if I'm wrong. I know that an ADSL modem needs to be plugged to a phone socket through a splitter whereas a router/switch should be connected to this modem on one end and to our computers on the others. So we need to cable every room of those of us who is going to use Internet. But the thing is that it's very unlikely that the Monastery landlord will allow us activities like drilling walls and laying cables to almost every room we occupy. So in my opinion we'll have to go with a WiFi router (or maybe even routers - if signal attenuation is significant there we'll probably need to install a few of them to increase connection range and quality).

Thank you for trying to obtain the information about simultaneous connections limitation - that is exactly what we should start from.

Hi everyone,
I found (finally !) the answer for the number of simultaneous connections : 3 in ethernet and 6 in WiFi.

I will ask Prof. Larivera to find it out from the italian operator.

Marin, thanks a lot for this information.
I wrote a letter to Mr. Danilo Larivera about week ago saying that some limitations might be, but it's better for you to write him too explaining that this most likely be the case.

Glad that Internet access in the residence will be prepared so soon.
Let's see if we can do something with the possible limitation.

Marin, thanks for info!
See you in L'Aquila!
