Date of Arrival

Hello all!

I hope everyone is doing well, especially with their VISA application. I believe most of us, if not all, are already going through it. And one of the things that they will ask is whether you have already booked a flight and when.

So, I just wanted to know, when do you plan on arriving at L'Aquila? I know Prof. Bruno suggested to arrive between August 25 and August 31 but is there anyone who will arrive on an earlier date?

I think I should arrive on working day. We may have something to do or someone to meet at the first time we're in L'Aquila. Since most offices are closed on weekends, I don't want to get there on holiday.

Maybe, arrival on friday 29th is ok.

Day, why the 29th? Don't you want to tour Rome or L'Aquila for a bit before classes start? :) Also, have you booked a flight already?

Jade, that is just a draft plan. Anyway, I haven't booked a flight yet. Prof.Bruno said we should arrive as close as possible to 31st. I hope we won't be too much busy on the first two weeks, so we will be free to tour on the period.

Another reason, I don't want to spend too much money before the scholarship starts. I am not sure how long we have to feed ourselves.

However, I really want to travel around. It will be a good trip if we meet some friends before and enjoy the tour together.

Martina, I have booked a flight which will arrive on 25th. I also hope to see you.

Tickets to Rome in the period were sold out quite quickly. My ticket is almost the last chance. So don't be careless, friends.

That's true. August is part of Rome's peak season for tourism, thus it is really hard to get tickets. >_< As much as possible, I don't want to arrive there on the 23rd of August (which I believe is Prof. Bruno's birthday!) because it's a weekend. So I'm still hoping I can book a flight that arrives on the 25th.

By the way, what's the baggage limit of the airlines you guys are flying with?

At Jun 6, 2008, 7:40:00 AM , Blogger Martina said...

20 kgs of baggage+ 10 kgs as hand luggage(maximal dimension of bag 55*35*25) , every kg under 20 is 1% of price of ticket...

it's standard for almost all european airlines, but usually thay are not so strict. Few times I had more then 25 kgs of baggage , and i have never paid.

The maximum weight for one piece of checked luggage is usually 32 kgs.

hi, all today I got the information for flight and I will most probably reach Rome on 26th of August. Are you people planning to stay in Rome for few days or go directly to L'Aquila....

Hope to c u all soon...

I booked a flight ticket and afterwards I was asked either to buy it or to book another one more expensive, so I bought it. Thus, if there is no VISA problems, I arrive to Rome on August 27.
As I see, the airport is not far away from the coast, so maybe it is a good idea to spend a day or two somewhere there (I haven't been to sea for years!).

How much did it cost you in US dollars? I got my ticket last Tuesday but unfortunately, there was a sudden price increase that day so I had to pay an additional amount of $95. :( But I did get a ticket that will arrive in Rome at the 25th of August. :) But I plan on going directly to L'Aquila. (I hope our accommodation there is ready by that time.) I think staying in Rome would be expensive. Besides, like what Ping said to me, we can all go there together on a weekend. :)

Anyway, has anyone received any news from Prof. Rubino? I think he's very busy lately... He hasn't replied to any of my emails yet.

Martina, I apologize to you that I have changed my flight to arrive on August 26 because of the lower price. The former flight rose its fuel surcharge so high. Thus I decided to cancel the booking and bought the new one.

Already, I have obtained the D+C visa to study in Italy for 5 months until February 22, 2009. The process lasted only 5 days.

Jade, my ticket cost was 300 US dollars including ISIC discount (by the way, I would recommend everyone to get their international student card [ISIC] because, as I was told by my acquaintances, there are really lots of discounts in Europe for holders of the card).
That was the cheapest flight I could find to arrive in Rome during the daytime.

Idea of going to Rome for a weekend altogether sounds very good! I hope we'll have some free time to travel around Italy during semester.

I wrote Prof. Rubino updating him about my VISA status a week ago and received a fast reply. But he might be extremely busy right now because of the MathMods IP he organizes.

$300? How lucky of you! I think the cheapest ticket to Rome here would be around $860. :( Mine is a real pain in the pocket, supposedly it was $960 but Cathay Pacific unfortunately increased the prices that day and so I had to pay an additional $95. :(( By the way, what's your luggage limit? Also, did Prof. Bruno mention anything about our accommodation?
Anyway, thanks for the ISIC tip. :)

And Day, how much did your ticket cost? How much was the more expensive one? Our countries are relatively closer to each other so I guess the fares are more similar. What airlines are you flying with? :)

Hi Jade!
My ticket cost was $688 by China Airlines. The expensive one was $930 by Thai Airways. Those are only two airlines that have non-stop flights to Rome.

Hi everyone, I got my flight for the 25th of august and I'll be arriving the 26th. I'm planning to go directly to l'Aquila.
Hope to see you soon

Jade, it's not surprising that both yours and Day's tickets are so expensive, because your locations are much farther from Italy than mine. By the way, how many hours does the flight last?
I'm flying with Aeroflot Russian Airlines. The limit of free luggage weight is 30 kg and I'm allowed to take 10 kgs with myself into a cabin.
As for the accomodation, Prof. Rubino said that later he would be able to send accomodation tickets scanned if I needed them for the embassy (but not now!).

El Rigo, hope to see you soon too.

Yup... Europe's really far from here. My flight from Manila to Hong Kong would take around 2 hours; Hong Kong to Fiumicino would take 12 and a half hours. I think there is no direct flight from Manila to Fiumicino. My expected time of arrival in Rome is 6:25 AM. A bit too early in the morning, don't you think? :) How about you guys?

Dmitry, you're quite lucky that the allowed weight is 30kg and 10kg. I don't know how I would survive with only a total of 27kg (20kg and 7kg). :(

Also, I haven't received any news from Prof. Rubino at all, even when I emailed him about my new date of arrival.

I'll have a long travel, I depart from Merida (my hometown), and have scales in Mexico City, Paris and I finally arrive to Rome at 5:30pm on the 26th. I would have wished to arrive a bit earlier. I got this because it was the cheapest one but still cost $1100us.

Around 15 hours in a plane - that's really something! I don't have a broad flight experience, so I can't even imagine how tough it is.
As for the luggage, I'm not sure if I have the 30+10 kgs limit, probably 30 is the overall limit including bags in a cabin - it isn't exactly clear from the ticket, so I should call the company and clarify this. Anyway, I don't think we need to have a lot of things with you, because we are going to spend only a semester in Italy and then move again (and usually after being to a foreign country the luggage weight can only increase :))

I arrive to the Fiumicino airport on August 27th something around noon (I should check the ticket though).

Bolor, what airport and time are you arriving at?

At Jul 19, 2008, 4:54:00 AM , Blogger Bolor said...

Hi there, I have just changed my flight day. (^^)
I will come on 30th at 18:20 (FCO).
The previous ticket was quite expensive (about 1400$) and there was not any other available tickets. Fortunately, I found a cheaper one(790$).

At Jul 20, 2008, 9:32:00 PM , Blogger Dmitry said...

Bolor, I'm happy that you've succeeded to find the cheaper ticket because the price of $1400 seems really terrible...

So, anyone else, except for me, arrives to Rome on August 27th?

hi all,

Hi, all, I will arrive on 27th, and the arrival time is 18:20 if every thing is right. The time seems to be a little late, maybe I have to stay at Rome for one night...

Looking forward to seeing u all at L'Aquila

Haris,
I just wonder why you and some other students decided to change the tickets, are there any cheaper ones appearing closer to departure date?

By the way, speaking of VISAs - I got mine only yesterday (and even so I was quite lucky to make it). I guess I was the last one among of all the students who got it and I'm glad this nightmare is finally over.

At Aug 12, 2008, 5:25:00 PM , Blogger Jade said...

Dmitry,

I'm really glad you got your VISA. :) What you went through is a nightmare indeed. Are you still arriving on the 27th of August? I think Martina and I will be the first ones to arrive. Maybe we could all go to Rome before classes start. :)

Anyway, do you think they are expecting us to go to L'Aquila by ourselves or will someone pick us up? I wonder...

At Aug 12, 2008, 9:20:00 PM , Blogger Dmitry said...

Jade,

Thanks for understanding my VISA nightmare :) I've never thought it could be so hard to obtain an Italian (non-touristic) VISA in Russia having all necessary documents.

I haven't changed my mind (nor tickets) to arrive on the 27th of August. So I think we will have time to travel a bit (to Rome or somewhere else).

I think all of us should come to L'Aquila by ourselves because it seems impossible they meet every single student in the airport - that's why Mr. Danilo Lariviera and prof. Bruno Rubino have put the information on how to get to L'Aquila on the website.

At Aug 13, 2008, 1:48:00 AM , Blogger Jade said...

If that is the case, I think it would be better to know who are arriving on the same day of one's arrival. I think it would be better to go to L'Aquila with a fellow MathMods student than to go there all alone. I'm really thankful that Martina and I will go to L'Aquila together. Commuting in a foreign country all by yourself with all your heavy luggage is a bit scary, don't you think so too?

By the way, what time are you arriving on the 27th, Dmitry?

At Aug 13, 2008, 8:19:00 AM , Blogger Haris said...

Dimitry, yes by changing flights it saved me both time and money. the flight on 26th was 90-95 euro expensive than this one and also I have to wait at Istanbul for 6 hrs for flight to Rome.

Jade, you are lucky that you will be travelling with Martina to L'Aquila. But, considering all the information posted on mathmods website, I dont think it is much difficult to travel from Rome to L'Aquila.

I think I should arrive to L'Aquila in september by train (Nice-Rome costs 54 euros), don't know exactly when.
As for VISA : had a flight to Paris where got it the same day (12/08) and came back to Nice lately. Lucky me !

See you soon in L'Aquila

Jade, the plan of going altogether from Rome to L'Aquila sounds pleasant, but different times of arrivals even within one day make it inconvenient to fulfil it in practice (I guess that sitting on the bags at the station and waiting half of the day for the arrival of another student is more difficult than catching a coach to get to L'Aquila in about a couple of hours alone).
My estimated time of arrival to Fiumicino airport is 10:45 in the morning, but the planes often delay.

Marin, our studies in L'Aquila start on the first of September, why aren't you planning to be there by that time?

At Aug 14, 2008, 2:12:00 AM , Blogger Jade said...

Of course it would be impractical to wait for half of the day. But if the waiting time is short, it's not such a bad idea. :) I guess I'm the only one intimidated by the thought of commuting alone in a foreign country. I should get used to it though. :)

At Aug 14, 2008, 10:27:00 PM , Blogger Dmitry said...

Jade, the idea is great but in this particular case since there're not many of us and even less who is active on the blog, the likelihood of several students arriving at nearly the same time is low.
I understand your worries about commuting alone (however, you're lucky to travel with Martina!), but staying at the station for a long time maybe not safe too (I don't how things are in Italy but in Russia there're usually all kinds of robbers around the big stations, so one must be alert staying there), though I'm not trying to scare you - I'm sure everything will be OK!
